What’s Missing From Your Work Hard - Play Hard Approach?

We can make no mistake about the fact that we live in a busy, fast-paced world today. I’ve often heard people, including myself, justify one’s busyness by saying that while they may work hard that they, in turn, play hard too. While incorporating both work and play helps with work-life balance, there could be an essential missing piece to this mindset.

Work, Play, And…

Recently, I was intrigued when I heard someone say they work hard, play hard, but then they take time to rest hard too. If you think about it, we ought to be just as mindful about taking a breather as we are when it comes to working and playing. But how often do we give ourselves any real recovery time?

My instinct is that many of us don’t build in time to disconnect from technology, get enough sleep at night, or even just take a much needed break from our daily tasks. Neglecting time for rest, we feel more worn out, distracted, and stretched too thin. What would it look like if we scheduled some time into our already full agenda to truly rest? I bet that our work and home life could benefit and even become more balanced.

A Place To Rest

In order to incorporate rest into your week, it helps to designate a place where you can relax. For me, I find rest when I sit in my pollinator garden created by my family and me for our bees. At the end of the day, I enjoy to go out and simply unwind there which enables me to rest and literally “just be.” In fact, I included a bench in the garden for that very reason. I find it relaxing to watch the bees and butterflies as I listen to the quiet, soothing sounds around me.

My challenge for you is to find a place of rest where you can recharge and be better equipped for both work and play. Truly, it’s crucial to take moments for reflection, to gather your thoughts, and focus on what is most important to you. Rest revitalizes your physical, mental, and emotional energy. So let’s get intentional about taking a break and begin to rest hard too.
