What Will You Suck At In 2020?

Studies show that about 80% of New Year’s resolutions are broken by February. We are just a few short weeks into 2020 so likely many of us have already broken some of our fresh, new goals and resolutions.

While we were well-meaning with our efforts to change, revamp, or tweak certain habits in our lives, alas, we just didn’t quite cut it. Like myself, I can just imagine some of you saying that you simply weren’t good at “it” or the effort wasn’t going well. I believe that I have a solution for you to bounce back from your “resolution fail” and even improve on your goals going forward.

A Unique and Helpful Tip

Setting a goal or new time management technique is usually something that challenges me because, so often, I generate a huge, unrealistic expectation for myself. While not my intent, I have aspirations for something to go extremely well but (sigh) the opposite ensues. Typically, I figure it’s best (or perhaps easier with less hassle) to go back to what I was doing before rather than attempting the new goal any further.

One of the best strategies that I can attest to working for me is to simply say upfront, “I’m going to suck at this.” (And yes, you just read me right.) The goal here is to lower the bar a bit, taking some pressure off yourself, which helps with potential concerns of overload and failure. This allows you to be in the moment, evaluate your new idea, and decide whether it’s something you want to continue or bail on, realizing it’s not for you.

Consider three questions as you keep in mind that you may just suck at this new goal. What capabilities do I require for true success? How can I pull it off? Would more practice make a difference? When do I give up if it’s not working? Ok, so that was four questions. Good catch. But seriously, ahead of time answer questions like these and reason with yourself that your new goal may not go well despite your interest, curiosity, and hope that it will. I suggest you go for it but embrace this different mindset which helps you to reduce undue pressure.

As you go forward in 2020, I hope you suck at many things so you can improve on some of them too. Give yourself a break from overly high expectations to succeed at everything, feeling free to suck occasionally, and ultimately be more successful going forward.
